Losing every key to a modern Volkswagen can quickly become a complicated and expensive problem — especially on newer VW MQB vehicles.
Flying Dragon Car Key recently completed a challenging 2018 Volkswagen Golf all keys lost replacement in Bondi, Sydney.
There were no working keys available, so this was not a standard spare-key programming job. The vehicle’s immobiliser information had to be recovered from multiple electronic modules before new keys could be authorised.
Our process involved identifying the vehicle’s engine ECU and DQ200 Gen 2 transmission, bench-reading the instrument cluster, retrieving additional data from the engine and transmission control modules, calculating the required synchronisation data, and finally programming two replacement VW keys.
The Golf was successfully started and returned to the customer with two working keys.
Total job cost: $2,000.
2018 VW Golf All Keys Lost – Why This Job Was Different
Adding a spare key to a Volkswagen when the customer still has a working key can often be relatively straightforward.
An all keys lost VW Golf, however, can be completely different.
This 2018 Golf uses Volkswagen’s MQB platform and immobiliser architecture. With no original key available, simply connecting a normal diagnostic tool and selecting “Add Key” was not enough.
We first needed to determine exactly what electronic systems were installed in the vehicle.
Our diagnostic scan identified:
Engine: 1.4 TSI
Engine Code: CZDA
Engine ECU: 04E 906 027 HD
Transmission: 7-Speed DSG
Transmission Type: DQ200 Gen 2 / 0CW
Transmission Controller: J743
Correct identification is important because Volkswagen uses different generations of immobiliser, ECU and transmission systems across the Golf range.
Once we knew exactly what we were dealing with, we could begin recovering the security information required to create new keys.
Step 1 – Removing and Reading the VW Golf Instrument Cluster
The first major step was removing the Golf’s instrument cluster.
Instead of attempting to replace the dashboard or immobiliser components, we removed the original cluster and connected directly to its electronics using specialist programming equipment.
The cluster was carefully bench-read to obtain the vehicle’s immobiliser information.
This is considerably more involved than normal VW spare key programming, but it allows us to work with the vehicle’s original electronic modules.
For customers, this is important: an experienced VW key specialist needs to understand not only how to cut and program a key, but also how Volkswagen’s immobiliser modules communicate with each other when every original key has been lost.

Step 2 – Reading the Engine ECU
After retrieving the required information from the instrument cluster, we moved on to the engine control unit (ECU).
The Golf was fitted with a CZDA 1.4 TSI engine and an ECU identified as:
VW/Audi Part Number: 04E 906 027 HD
Data from the engine management system formed another part of the information required for this particular all-keys-lost procedure.
Specialist module-level work like this is one of the major differences between an advanced VW MQB all keys lost service and an ordinary key duplication job.

Step 3 – DQ200 Gen 2 Transmission Data
Our initial diagnostic identification also confirmed that this Golf was equipped with a DQ200 Gen 2 DSG transmission (0CW).
The transmission electronics were identified as:
System: GSG DQ200G2
Control Module: J743
VW Part Number: 0CW 300 041 Q
We accessed the required transmission information and combined it with the data recovered from the other vehicle modules.
This allowed us to move on to the most important stage: synchronising the immobiliser data required to authorise new keys.

Step 4 – Calculating and Synchronising the VW MQB Data
With the required information successfully retrieved from the:
Instrument cluster + Engine ECU + DQ200 transmission controller
we were able to process the vehicle’s security and synchronisation information.
All of these systems need to communicate correctly.
If the required immobiliser information does not match, the vehicle may recognise parts of the system but still refuse to authorise engine starting.
This is why an advanced Volkswagen all-keys-lost job requires much more than simply supplying a replacement remote.
After processing the required synchronisation data, we were ready to program the new keys.
Step 5 – Two New VW Golf Keys Successfully Programmed
We prepared two replacement keys for the customer and completed the final programming procedure.
Both keys were successfully accepted.
We tested the vehicle repeatedly to confirm:
✓ Both replacement keys recognised
✓ Immobiliser authorisation successful
✓ Engine starts correctly
✓ Remote locking and unlocking working
✓ Vehicle starts repeatedly with both keys
The 2018 Golf was successfully returned to operation.

Whether you still have one working key or have lost every key to the vehicle, the correct procedure depends heavily on the Volkswagen model, year and immobiliser generation.
The Volkswagen Golf is one of the VW models we regularly work with.
Depending on year and specification, different Golf generations use significantly different immobiliser systems.
We provide key replacement services for many:
VW Golf
Golf GTI
Golf R
Golf Wagon
Golf Alltrack
Services range from adding a second key when one working key remains through to advanced VW Golf all keys lost programming.
For later MQB Golf models, additional module data may be required when every key has been lost, as demonstrated by this 2018 Bondi case.
We also provide VW Tiguan key replacement and programming in Sydney.
This includes both older Tiguan key systems and newer MQB-generation vehicles.
If you have:
Lost your VW Tiguan key,
Only have one key remaining,
Need a second/spare key, or
Have lost all VW Tiguan keys,
we can identify the vehicle’s key and immobiliser system and determine the appropriate programming procedure.
For customers who still have one working key, arranging a spare before the final key disappears can often make the replacement process substantially simpler.
Flying Dragon Car Key also works with Volkswagen Passat keys, including remote keys, smart keys and immobiliser programming depending on the vehicle generation.
If your Passat key is lost or you need an additional key, send us the year and model so we can identify the correct key system before attending.
Need a VW Polo replacement key in Sydney?
We can assist with many generations of Volkswagen Polo, including:
Spare keys
Lost keys
Remote keys
Key cutting
Key programming
All keys lost situations
Older VW systems and newer MQB-based systems require different procedures, so we identify the vehicle before deciding on the correct programming method.
Volkswagen’s newer vehicle range increasingly shares MQB-based electronic architecture.
We provide key programming services for compatible models including:
VW T-Roc
VW T-Cross
VW Arteon
VW Taos
VW Touran
The exact programming capability depends on the year, key system and immobiliser generation, so vehicle identification is performed before the job.
Our Volkswagen services are not limited to passenger cars.
We also work with many VW commercial vehicles, including:
Volkswagen Transporter
VW Multivan
VW Caravelle
VW Caddy
VW Crafter
Commercial vehicles are particularly inconvenient when a key is lost because downtime can directly affect a business.
Our mobile VW key replacement service in Sydney allows many jobs to be handled at the vehicle’s location rather than requiring the vehicle to be transported elsewhere.
One of the biggest concerns customers have after losing every Volkswagen key is how they are going to move the vehicle.
A car with no working key may be parked:
in a driveway,
in an apartment car park,
at work,
on the street,
or even in an underground parking area.
Flying Dragon Car Key operates as a mobile automotive locksmith service in Sydney, meaning we can assess many VW key replacement jobs at the vehicle’s location.
For complex Volkswagen vehicles, we carry specialist equipment for key programming and electronic module work.
The 2018 Golf in this Bondi case is a good example.
Instead of simply replacing parts, we recovered the required information from the vehicle’s existing electronics, generated the necessary synchronisation data and successfully programmed two new keys.
If you currently have only one Volkswagen key, making a spare is usually much easier than waiting until every key has been lost.
When a working key is still available, the immobiliser programming procedure can be significantly different from an all-keys-lost situation.
An all-keys-lost MQB vehicle may require considerably more diagnostic work, module access and data processing.
So if you have recently purchased a used:
Golf, Golf GTI, Golf R, Tiguan, Passat, Polo, T-Roc, T-Cross, Arteon, Caddy or Transporter
and it only came with one key, adding another key can provide useful protection against a much more complicated all-keys-lost situation later.
Flying Dragon Car Key provides mobile VW key replacement across Sydney, including the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, Western Sydney and surrounding areas.
This Bondi Golf was a complex MQB job, but not every Volkswagen key replacement requires this level of work.
Depending on your vehicle, we may be able to provide:
VW spare key while you wait
Replacement for a lost VW key
Two new keys after all keys are lost
Remote/keyless entry programming
Emergency mobile key replacement
Advanced MQB immobiliser solutions
Our approach is to identify the vehicle and its immobiliser system first, then use the appropriate procedure rather than treating every Volkswagen as the same.
This job started with a 2018 Volkswagen Golf in Bondi with no working keys.
After identifying the CZDA 1.4 TSI engine and DQ200 Gen 2 transmission, we removed and read the instrument cluster, accessed the required engine ECU and transmission data, obtained the necessary synchronisation information and completed the immobiliser programming process.
The final result:
2 new VW Golf keys programmed
Remote functions working
Immobiliser successfully authorised
Engine starting normally
Original vehicle modules retained
Total cost: $2,000
Job completed successfully
For us, this is not simply a case of cutting a key.
It demonstrates the level of electronic and immobiliser work that can be required when dealing with a modern Volkswagen MQB all-keys-lost vehicle.
If you need a VW key replacement in Sydney, contact Flying Dragon Car Key.
Whether you need a simple spare key for your Golf or Tiguan, have lost your only VW key, or are dealing with a more complicated MQB all-keys-lost situation, send us:
