Vehicle: Volvo
Service: Spare Key / Additional Key Programming
Location: Sydney, NSW
Time Required: Approximately 1 hour
Result: New spare key successfully programmed
Dealer Quote: Around $2,000
Adding a spare key to a Volvo can sometimes be much more complicated than people expect.
This customer only wanted one additional key for their Volvo.
Before contacting Flying Dragon Car Key, they had already asked more than five different locksmiths and automotive key specialists.
The answer was almost always the same:
“We can’t do it.”
The customer then contacted a Volvo dealership and was quoted approximately $2,000 for the job.
Instead of paying the dealership price, the customer contacted Flying Dragon Car Key in Sydney.
After identifying the vehicle’s immobiliser system, we accessed the original CEM – Central Electronic Module, directly read the required security data, and successfully programmed a new Volvo spare key.
The entire job was completed in approximately one hour.
The customer now had two working keys and saved a significant amount of money compared with the dealership option.
For many vehicles, adding a spare key can be relatively straightforward.
A locksmith connects a diagnostic programmer through the OBD port, communicates with the immobiliser system and adds the new key.
However, some Volvo vehicles are very different.
The vehicle’s security information is closely linked to the CEM, or Central Electronic Module.
Depending on the model, generation and immobiliser configuration, standard OBD key programming may not provide everything required to authorise a new key.
This is why some workshops can make keys for common Japanese or Korean vehicles but may decline certain Volvo jobs.
In this case, several locksmiths had already told the customer they were unable to complete the programming.
For us, the solution was to go deeper into the vehicle’s electronics.
The customer still had one working Volvo key.
This was important.
Whenever a customer has only one remaining key, we strongly recommend making a spare before that final key is lost or damaged.
An additional-key job is often much easier than an all-keys-lost Volvo situation, where significantly more immobiliser recovery work may be required.
Before beginning, we verified the operation of the original key and confirmed the vehicle’s electronic system was functioning normally.
The next stage was accessing the vehicle’s Central Electronic Module.
The CEM is one of the most important electronic modules in many Volvo vehicles.
It communicates with multiple systems throughout the car and contains information associated with the vehicle’s security and immobiliser functions.
Unlike a simple OBD programming job, accessing this module required careful removal of interior components around the passenger-side dashboard area.
The goal was to reach the original CEM without damaging:
- Interior trim
- Electrical connectors
- Wiring harnesses
- Fuse assemblies
- The original electronic module
This is one of the reasons advanced Volvo key programming requires more than simply owning a key programmer.
Accessing the Volvo Central Electronic Module during an advanced spare key programming job in Sydney.
After removing the required trim, we gained direct access to the original CEM assembly.
The module can be recognised by its multiple large electrical connectors and integrated fuse and control-module structure.
On modern vehicles, these modules are responsible for much more than a single function.
They form part of a larger network of control units that communicate with each other continuously.
Because immobiliser-related information is connected to the vehicle’s electronic identity, simply replacing the module or attempting random programming procedures is not an appropriate solution.
Our objective was to retain the vehicle’s original CEM and safely retrieve the information already stored inside it.

The original Volvo CEM accessed before immobiliser data reading.
This was the most important stage of the job.
We accessed the original CEM electronically and used professional automotive programming equipment to read the required data.
Instead of relying entirely on standard diagnostic programming, we obtained the security information directly from the vehicle’s original module.
This allowed us to prepare the information needed for the new key.
Advanced module reading requires considerable care.
Incorrect connection, unstable voltage or improper programming procedures can potentially corrupt a control module or cause communication problems.
That is why this type of work should be performed with proper automotive electronic equipment and experience.
Reading the original Volvo CEM data required for immobiliser and spare key programming.
Once the CEM data had been successfully acquired, the relevant immobiliser information could be processed.
This was the step that allowed us to move beyond the limitations encountered by the other locksmiths.
The customer had already been told by more than five businesses that the key could not be programmed.
The problem was not necessarily that the vehicle was impossible to work with.
The problem was that conventional OBD programming alone was not sufficient for this particular job.
By working directly with the original CEM data, we were able to continue with the replacement key procedure.
After obtaining the required information, we prepared the new Volvo key.
The key was configured for the vehicle and then added to the immobiliser system.
Because the customer still had their original working key, the new key was added while maintaining normal operation of the existing key.
The objective was simple:
Original key works.
New key works.
Vehicle starts normally with both keys.
That is exactly what we achieved.
After programming was completed, the new key was tested with the vehicle.
We checked:
- Vehicle starting
- Immobiliser authorisation
- Remote locking
- Remote unlocking
- Key recognition
- Original key functionality
- New key functionality
Everything operated correctly.
The customer now had two fully functioning Volvo keys.
Original Volvo key and newly programmed spare key after successful CEM-based programming.
This case is a good example of the difference between basic key programming and advanced automotive immobiliser work.
Before finding us, the customer contacted more than five locksmiths.
They were repeatedly told that the job could not be completed.
The Volvo dealership option was approximately $2,000.
Flying Dragon Car Key approached the problem differently.
We accessed the original CEM, retrieved the required immobiliser data and successfully programmed the new key.
Total working time: approximately one hour.
The customer avoided the much higher dealership cost and did not need to replace unnecessary electronic modules.
Modern automotive locksmithing is no longer just about cutting metal keys.
Vehicles such as Volvo use sophisticated electronic immobiliser systems.
A technician working on these vehicles may need knowledge of:
- CEM modules
- Immobiliser systems
- EEPROM and module data
- Vehicle communication networks
- Diagnostic programming
- Electronic module removal
- Automotive circuit boards
- Key configuration and adaptation
That is why two locksmiths can look at exactly the same vehicle and give completely different answers.
One technician may say:
“It cannot be done.”
Another technician with the correct equipment and electronic knowledge may be able to provide a solution.
If your Volvo currently has only one working key, making a spare key now can save you significant money later.
With at least one working key available, the vehicle is still operational and there may be more options available for programming.
If the final key is lost, the job can become much more complicated.
A Volvo all-keys-lost situation may require additional immobiliser recovery procedures, module-level data acquisition or other advanced electronic work.
The cost can therefore increase significantly.
A spare key is not only convenient.
It can also be an important form of insurance against a much more expensive all-keys-lost situation.

Some Volvo models cannot have an additional key programmed using a simple OBD procedure. In these cases, we may need to access the vehicle’s original security data in order to program the new key correctly.
Our focus is specifically on car key replacement and key programming. We do not provide general CEM, ECU or electronic module repair services.
If you have been told by another locksmith that they cannot add a spare key to your Volvo, contact Flying Dragon Car Key before paying dealership prices.
In many cases, we may still be able to successfully add a new key while keeping the vehicle’s original electronic modules unchanged.
Flying Dragon Car Key specialises in advanced automotive key and immobiliser services.
In addition to Volvo, we also work with complex European vehicle security systems including:
